Thinning by Mastication

Some projects on National Forest lands around Woodland Park are being accomplished by mastication. Large machines grind smaller diameter trees into small chunks and the woody material is left in the woods. The Forest Service would prefer to utilize this material as chips or make it available for firewood. However, either because of the projects location behind private lands or lack of access by roads, the material can not be utilized. In these situations, mastication will still be considered as a tool to reduce the fuel loading and reduce the potential for catastrophic wildfire.
